LEDs in Lighting Technologies

"LEDs - a new quality of lighting"

LED applications in lighting technologies are witnessing a massive boom. As Russia does not have substantial domestic LED production facilities, Russian lighting experts have immense interest in new LED applications.

The 3rd INTERNATIONAL LED FORUM “LEDs in Lighting Technologies” features state-of-the art technologies. Renowned scientists and application specialists will present latest findings in semiconductor research, business strategies and application projects. Investment plans of Russian companies will be another important topic.

The INTERNATIONAL LED FORUM “LEDs in Lighting Technologies“ annually takes place in the frame of INTERLIGHT MOSCOW, Russia's leading trade fair for light and lighting technologies.

GREAT SUCCESS of LED FORUM MOSCOW 2009

After impressive success in 2008, it was decided to hold the LED FORUM MOSCOW 2009 in more extended format. Great interest to preliminary registration in advance of the event was indicative of LED significance for Russian light engineering.

3rd LED FORUM MOSCOW has once again proved its status of major event in the sector of LED technologies on the post-Soviet territory. The program was expanded and became a 2-day one. Alongside with two plenary sessions the program included three specialized seminars on the products - "Indoor and outdoor lighting with LEDs", "Shop Lighting with LEDs" and "Lighting Control Systems / LEDs". Business backers appeared: OSRAM Opto Semiconductors became a premium sponsor, while the seminars were sponsored by iGuzzini (Italy) and INSTA (Germany). Leading foreign publications, such as LED professional, LED magazine and LED inside, were the media partners of the Forum, alongside with its constant partner - Russian magazine "Svetotekhnika". Russian magazine "Poluprovodnikovaya Svetotekhnika", premiered in September, was among media partners of the Forum, as well.

Growth of demand for the meaningful and comprehensive information about light-emitting diodes exceeded the arrangers' expectations this year. We had to stop registration of those, who wished to visit the events of the Forum, one and a half month prior to its opening, because all seats in both plenary sessions and seminars were already occupied.  The Forum was visited by more than 400 experts from the leading Russian trading, manufacturing and design companies.

This year the topic of the Forum was formulated as "LEDs - new quality of lighting". In the course of selection of reporters and topics of the reports and seminars, a lot of attention was paid to: LED features, enabling creation of a qualitatively new lighting environment; analysis of LEDs range of use for lighting purposes; rating and light hygiene issues. With due regard for the last year's positive results, an open discussion as to possibility of replacement of filament lamps with LEDs was conducted.

PLENARY SESSION / November 11, 2009

The plenary session was opened officially by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, the premium sponsor of the Forum, following which the representatives of leading institutes of Russian and Belorussian Academies of Sciences have presented the prospects of development of high quality LED light and principles of introduction thereof. After that, the representatives of such companies as Alanod, Cree, Nichia, Philips Lighting Russia, Philips Lumileds, Polymer Optics and Seoul Semiconductors, Svetlana Optoelectronica, NIIAS and Optogun, have made their presentations.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has presented its report titled as "Transforming efficient LED technology into light and life". Having outlined the main results, achieved by the company with regard to traditional LED, the reporter Dieter Soukup has specified the prospects of organic light-emitting diodes, such as 62 lm/W by the beginning of 2010, and application of industrial technologies of OLED-based glass flats in 5 to 7 years.

At the plenary session held on November 11, 2009, something like 220 participants have managed to receive information about the latest developments and present-day evolution of Russian and the CIS light-emitting diode markets.

3 seminars were held concurrently on the second day of the LED FORUM MOSCOW. Around 300 participants have visited the seminars on November 12.

Seminar A "Shop Lighting with LEDs" was held by Nikolay Mikhaylov (iGuzzini) and Simone Mariotto, light designer of Liteq Design (Italy). The best part of the seminar was held by Simone Mariotto, the light designer, widely experienced in planning and realization of shop lighting concepts. His company had developed and introduced boutique lighting concepts for Roberto Cavalli, Ermenegildo Zegna, Pomellato, Pinko, Mercedes, Alviero Martini and many other well-known companies. Maestro Mariotto has presented his methods regarding: use of light-emitting diodes for shop area; selection of components and design concepts. That seminar was sponsored by iGuzzini (Italy), the leading manufacturer of outdoor and indoor lighting devices.

Seminar B "Indoor&Outdoor Lighting with LEDs" was held by Osram Opto Semiconductors, the premium sponsor of 3rd LED FORUM MOSCOW "LED in Lighting Technologies". Modern developments, products of Osram Opto Semiconductors and fields of possible use thereof were presented to the visitors of that seminar by Claudia Dippold, Dieter Soukup and Leonid Moiseev.

Seminar C "Lighting Control Systems/LEDs" was held by Insta Elektro GmbH (Germany). Simon Osipov has presented his report on energy saving option through the implementation of lighting control systems with LED.

PLENARY SESSION / November 12, 2009

The Forum was finished by the plenary session, where standardization and rating issues were to be discussed in detail.

A. I. Tereshkin , the director of OAO "NIIIS, named after A. N. Lodygin" (Republic of Mordovia) has presented his report "On development of the Program of modernization of lighting standards and regulations for light-emitting illuminants". The report had induced a poignant reaction of the audience and slipped to discussion of lighting regulatory framework as a whole, which was noticed by a number of participants, representing design and manufacturing enterprises. Domestic manufacturers are put at a disadvantage as compared to foreign manufacturers. Light-emitting diodes are actually blind introduced by Russian companies. No research and regulatory framework development is performed. Unfortunately, the standpoint of Russian Lighting Research Institute, named after Vavilov, regarding that issue of paramount importance for the new market, was not presented.

Active discussion of the report on standards slipped to the pre-arranged discussion as to "Can LEDs now already replace incandescent lamps in lighting." The tone of discussion was set by the reports, presented by G. S. Sarychev, D. Sc. in engineering, academician of the AES of the Russian Federation, LLC VNISI laboratory chief, and Nikolay Kuhtin manager of Philips department LED in Russia.

Sarychev has drawn a conclusion, that, inasmuch as the situation in Russia with standards, regulations and manufacturing of any illuminants is bad, it should be better to ascertain, what actually is better. That conclusion was opposed by Kukhtin, who has presented obvious advantages of light-emitting diodes and world experience of their introduction. As usual, the truth is in the middle and they are both right.

Regulatory authorities have to be persuaded to finance the research and development of new regulations, which results must be introduced based on qualitative engineering approach. Representatives of trading organizations have stated the necessity to formulate well-defined market criteria to be used to compare the efficiency, useful life and reliability of light. An active stand in discussion was taken by members of lighting department, Moscow Energy Institute.

Summing up the results of 3rd International FORUM MOSCOW "LEDs in lighting Technologies", it is possible to state, that the Forum actualized itself as national industrial event, granting a platform for: discussion of pressing problems; presentation of fashion merchandise; and development of lighting community's opinion.
