Russia's LED market: an import market
98 % import quota
According to a survey of the RBK market research institute, Russia imports 98 % of its LED lighting. LEDs to the value of 50.8 million EUR are currently being sold in Russia annually. A 20 % growth is forecast for 2010. The Russian Ministry for Economic Development expects annual growth rates of 30 - 35 % when viewed on the long term.
- Architectural lighting: 29.7 %
- Industrial lighting: 25.7 %
- Exterior and street lighting: 21.8 %
- Interior lighting: 10.9 %
300 million LEDs
300 million LEDs could be sold annually if each newly-purchased light bulb were to be replaced by an LED? (this calculation has already taken into account the greater longevity of an LED)
The law concerning the "Enhancement of Energy Efficiency in the Russian Federation" makes provision for light bulbs which produce up to 25 watt to be replaced on a step-by-step basis by 2014. In addition, draft legislation prescribing the direct transition to LED-based light sources is scheduled to pass into national law at the end of June 2010.
Russian legislation boosts demand for LEDs
Russians obliged to use LED lighting sources
The Russian government is moving ahead with the use of LEDs as an energy-efficient lighting solution in the country and striving for a leadership role in terms of energy-efficient lighting in Europe. On March 23rd, 2010 the Presidential Commission for Modernisation announced that the transition from incandescent bulbs to energy-efficient lighting devices will not take place by implementing energy-efficient saving lamps (CFLs), but by converting to LEDs directly. The corresponding law should be in effect by June of this year.
This new law will result in the Russian lighting industry's escalated adaptation to the new conditions. Only one factory in Russia currently manufactures light-emitting diodes. The production capacity (about 10 % of the requirements) obviously does not support full coverage of the industry and the population with LED lighting.
Yet another factor is stimulating the demand for new lighting technologies: Russia is experiencing a significant rise in electricity prices. The cost for one kilowatt is expected to jump up to € 0.15 per kWh from currently € 0.05 per kWh in the course of 2010.
